There’s a lot of information on the internet about what to eat to lose weight, but not a whole lot about what to drink to lose weight. It’s about time we changed that.
But before we get into my top 3 weight-loss drinks, let me tell you a secret. There aren’t very many healthy drinks out there. I’d say something like 95% of all the drinks in the world simply are not good for weight-loss. In fact, most will probably make you even fatter.
Juice is a good example. We’re taught from a very young age that we should drink our juice because it’s good for us. It’s not. Most “natural” fruit juices will have about as much sugar as a bottle of coke. And even if that sugar isn’t added, it’s still sugar. It’s still making us fat. Juice is not good for you.
Another drink that’s been sold to us as being “healthy” is milk. Whether you believe the Paleo argument or not, we are the only mammal on earth who drinks milk past infancy. We can’t properly digest the calcium in milk, either, so there’s really no reason to drink milk.
So, if both juice and milk aren’t good for us, what is? What should we be drinking in order to maximise our weight-loss? Find out what to drink to lose weight below:
What To Drink To Lose Weight Fast
Drink #1: Water.
But that wasn’t a surprise, was it? Water is, in a word, amazing.
There are far too many reasons why water is great for me to list them all. So, I’ll limit this section to the two best weight-loss properties of water.
First of all, water has no calories. 0. Zilch. It’s practically the only drink on the planet that contains absolutely no calories, which means you can drink as much as you want without the worry of gaining weight.
The second reason water is so good is the satiating effect it has on your body. The more water you drink, the fuller you get. This is mostly due to the fact that we’re all chronically dehydrated, but still, the end result is the same: drink more water, and you”ll end up eating less food.
It’s virtually free, it has no taste (so you can’t say you dislike it), and, it’s one of the few things we need to maintain human life. So pour yourself a nice big glass of water, and drink your way to weight-loss.
Drink #2: Green Smoothies.
Depending on what you throw in your smoothies, they can be either super healthy or super unhealthy. If you’re only using a small amount of spinach, and loading it full of yoghurt, fruit, and milk/juice, it’s not going to be very healthy.
However, if you just use spinach/kale, water, and a banana, it’s going to be much lower in sugaar/calories, and much higher in nutrients. A good rule of thumb is to use a lot of vege and try to limit the amount of fruit that you put in.
After all, fruit is very high in sugar, and although it is good for you, should be limited to 2-3 serves per day. Vegetables, by comparison, are very low in sugar and calories, while containing heaps of vital nutrients.
My favourite smoothie consists of about 100g of spinach, 500mL of (sugar free) almond milk, 2 small bananas, and a 1/4 cup of frozen berries. It tastes great, is super healthy, and is perfect for weight loss.
Drink #3: Green Tea.
While I personally don’t drink green tea (or any tea for that matter), I can’t deny that it is very good for weight loss. (As long as you don’t add sugar and/or milk!)
Being low in calories (virtually 0), moderately high in caffeine, and very high in EGCG (Epigallocatechin gallate) is what makes green tea just so damn good. The cafffeine and ECGC make your body burn more energy in your day-to-day activities.
And the fact that there are so few calories means you won’t be consuming much energy from your drink, as opposed to say juice or milk.
A final reason why green tea is good is the taste. I’m not a fan of tea, and I can tolerate green tea. If you’re into tea, you’d probably love it. Go down to the store and buy some, try it out, and see for yourself whether you like it or not.
So, there ya have it.
